If You'se a Viper - Stuff Smith

Written in the late 20s by the legendary jazz violinist Stuff Smith (1909-1967) , who is remembered as “the cat that took the apron-strings off the fiddle.”

G                         Em    Am         D
Dream about a reefer five feet long
G               Em         Am        D

It's mighty mezz but not too strong
G            G7          C         F9
You'll be high, but not for long
G    D        G
If you're a viper

I'm the king of everything
Gotta be high before I can swing
Light a tea and let it be
If you're a viper

G7
When your throat gets dry
G7
And you know you're high
C
And everything is dandy
A7
Truck on down to the candy store
D
And bust your top on peppermint candy

Then you know that you're body's spent.
You don't care if you don't pay rent.
Sky is high and so am I
If you're a viper.

A spontaneous rendition here by my friend Neil Hopper on the Newcastle Quayside.

I love it when you give me things
G C D G

Guy Love - from Scrubs

C F E
Let’s face the facts about me and you,
  Am Bb
A love unspecified.
           Bb
Though I’m proud to call you “Chocolate Bear”,
    F G
The crowd will always talk and stare.
  C F E
I feel exactly those feelings, too,
    Am F
And that’s why I keep them inside.
 C F C
‘Cause this bear can’t bear the world’s disdain
    Bb G
And sometimes it’s easier to hide,
         G7
Than explain our
C
Guy love,
       E
That’s all it is,
Am
Guy love,
     C
He’s mine, I’m his,
        F Fm C B
There’s nothing gay about it in our eyes.
    Am
You ask me ‘bout this thing we share
       Gm Am
And he tenderly replies:
     F
It’s guy love,
    G C
Between two guys.
      Ab Bb
We’re closer than the average man and wife.
       Ab Bb
That’s why our matching bracelets say “Turk and JD”.
              C
You know I’ll stick by you for the rest of my life.
           G G7
You’re the only man who’s ever been inside of meee!
--Whoa, whoa, I just took out his appendix!--
           C F
There’s no need to clarify.
   Em
Oh no?
           Am C
Just let it grow more and more each day.
     F C
It’s like I married my best friend.
         Bb G
But in a totally manly way.

Let’s go!
     C
It’s guy love,
      E
Don’t compromise,
    Am C
The feelings of some other guy,
F Fm C
Holding up your heart in to the sky.
        Am
I’ll be there to care through all the lows
        G Am
I’ll be there to share the highs.
   F
It’s guy love,
    G C Em
Between two guys.
    Am
And when I say, “I love you, Turk”,
     G Am
It’s not what it implies.
     F
It’s guy love,
   F
Between,
G
Two,
C F G C
Guys.

Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World - Israel Kamikawiwo'ole

I bought a ukulele for myself for Christmas but neglected it as i was trying to learn the mandolin at the time, but then i saw an episode of Scrubs with the Israel Kamikawiwo'ole version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow / It's a Wonderful World and thought - i could learn to play that! so i found a tutorial on youtube and hand copied the lyrics and chords out in my little notebook and spent 12 hours on a sick day learning to play it on my Mahalo ULP1/CS Cherry Sunburst. Then  I saw the Kala KA-SC for sale, and  she was the vintage style ukulele i had originaly wanted, so now I have two ukuleles - Johnny and Baby - and i've been playing for 3 weeks now!

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea by Jeff Mangum

  G Em C D

G Em
What a beautiful face
                       C
i have found in this place
                  D
that is circling all around the sun.
G Em
What a beautiful dream
                          C
that could flash on the screen
                  D G
in a blink of an eye and be gone from me
      Em
soft and sweet
         C D G Em C D
let me hold it close and keep it here with me

 G Em
and one day we will die
                    C D
and our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
 G Em
but for now we are young
                  C
let us lay in the sun
                D G
and count every beautiful thing we can see
      Em
Love to be
        C D G Em C D
in the arms of all i'm keepin here with me

 G Em C
what a curious life we have found here tonight
                     D
there is music that sounds from the street
 G Em
there are lights in the cloud
                 C
Anne's ghost all around
                        D G
hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me
     Em
soft and sweet
        C D G Em C D
How the notes all bend and reach above the trees

Em C
now how i remember you
                                  G
how i would push my fingers through
                                    D
your mouth to make those muscles move
                                       Em
that make your voice so smooth and sweet
                                  C
And now we keep where we don't know
                                  G
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
                             D
with one you loved so long ago
                               Em C G D
now he don't even know his name

 G Em
What a beautiful face
                      C
i have found in this place
                  D
that is circling all round the sun
 G Em
and when we meet on a cloud
                      C
I'll be laughing out loud
                       D G
I'll be laughing with everyone i see
     Em
Can't believe
     C D G Em C D G
how strange it is to be anything at all

Power To The People? (Springtime for Hitler - The Producers)

Today friend of mine asked, "What's the diference between power and authority?"
So I replied, "Power is what people misuse when you give them too much authority."

I'll never forget being in the middle of a demonstration once with people shouting POWER TO THE PEOPLE! to which a passerby commented to his friend,"I don't want power to the people! That's too much power!"

On a lighter note, here's a cheeky little number which i'd love to learn to play on the ukulele about a man who was given too much power once
